Every year the Shadsworth with Whitebirk Big Local Carry out a consultation with local residents identifying needs which are affecting the community. All the data is collated and themes are fed into the Big Local Action Plan and the board decide how much funding is needed to tackle the issues.

The first two years of the programme the Board decided to commission organisations to develop projects that tackled the identified issue.

The Big Local Board has adopted a different approach to running their third year programme. Tender briefs were designed and local organisations were invited to apply to deliver the work;

Money Sense – Lancashire Women’s Centre
This project is around enabling people to better understand and manage their budget and money matters.

The course will include knowing your benefits, budgeting and prioritising debts. The course will also highlight the importance of shopping around for best deals, credit options, reducing energy costs ans eating healthy on a budget.

Mind Fit – Lancashire Women’s Centre
This project focuses on increasing local people’s chances of gaining employment by providing training to improve their numeracy and literacy skills through a training programme. The course includes supporting individuals to develop key ‘first steps’ employability skills including confidence building, self-esteem, communication, perception and goal setting. It also includes numeracy, literacy and digital inclusion skills.

Debt Advice – Debt Aware
The sessions include lessons on areas such as BUDGETING, BANK ACCOUNTS and BANKING and we focus on the whole concept of saving and the reasons why we should save money.

The programme designed is excellent for life skills. Other aspects that are covered are numeracy and literacy but the main areas are life skills or Personal, Social, Health and Financial Education. These lead to a quite wide ranging understanding of Money Management.

Finally we try and adopt the “Peer to Peer” approach which is at the very heart of our current programme. In fact the Debt Advice Foundation trustees are very strong in their view that this element of the programme must be maintained.

Youth Forum – SLYNCS, Youth Service & Newground
The project consists of carrying out some outreach work to identify suitable young people from across the Shadsworth / Whitebirk area who can be a part of the forum and that will benefit from an opportunity to help develop the local area. The project will enable young people to be trained to carry out peer led consultations that will have an impact on the action plan formulated for the Big Local. SLYNCS will support the young people to become peer researchers by using our networks and partners (such as Blackburn College and UCLan). Once trained, the young people will be supported to access young people both through established groups and also outreach work ensuring that as many young people are listened to as possible. The young people will form the forum to feed into the Big Local Board helping them to make decisions about where funding is allocated. The start of this process will be our young people presenting their work to the Big Local and organising an event for the wider community.

Community Pride – Hillside Residents Association
The project consists of enabling local people to participate in community clean ups. The project will work in partnership with the 4 local primary schools to help develop and deliver positive messages around keeping the community clean. It will also encourage local people to help design and develop ideas that will enhance the local natural environment. The identified area will be the garages and back alleys around Westbury Garden United Reformed Church and finally the project will create volunteering opportunities for local people.
